Design Tour: Orange County Fair & Event Center 06.25.26

The OC Fair & Event Center undertook a renovation and expansion of its central administration building, designed by LPA Studios, to honor its historical roots while embracing modern functionality and sustainability. Drawing inspiration from the site’s agricultural heritage. The project team sought to create a space that feels both familiar and forward-looking.

The design features timber framing and a structural system that reflects traditional barn construction, while also delivering a warm, visually clean, and efficient interior environment. Abundant natural light and reclaimed materials contribute to an inviting atmosphere that blends old-world character with contemporary design.

A key focus of the project was sustainability. By utilizing cross-laminated timber (CLT) instead of conventional materials like steel or concrete, the building significantly reduces embodied carbon and material consumption. Mechanical and electrical systems were carefully integrated and concealed to preserve the architectural integrity of the space.

The completed addition functions as a central “town square” for the campus—bright, open, and welcoming—while maintaining clear connections to its historical context. Overall, the project successfully balances tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility, resulting in a modern interpretation of a classic barn-raising concept.
