COTE: Small Houses Design for Sustainability and Tour

Tiny houses have quickly transitioned from fad to trend, becoming a viable alternative to traditional lifestyle housing. Tiny houses can be used to strategically increase density, access, and diversity around transit, education, and other nodes. In this course you will explore the challenges and potential of tiny houses. You will view two current examples of small house design and explore the financial challenges, building code, planning, zoning, and governance issues. You will explore how communities, architects, and local governments can change the urban fabric to meet shifting housing demand.

Learning Objectives:
1.Identify the unique financial challenges with small homes.
2.Identify the human factors that are different in small homes.
3.How to use design as a sustainability objective.
4.Understand current trends in small and tiny home fabrication.
